In 2015, BT announced that they would be turning off their PSTN (Public Switch Telephone Network) and ISDN (Integrated Service Digital Network) by 2025.
What are PSTN and ISDN Networks?
PSTN is the original analogue network. Data and voice travel over copper wires which assists analogue voice services and broadband.
The ISDN supported the existing PSTN system and improved services that would carry digital data and voice traffic.
Compared to the PSTN, the ISDN’s digital architecture allows data to be transported more quickly and efficiently.
What system is going to be put in place after the Switch Off?
The replacement for the old PSTN and ISDN networks will be VoIP – Voice Over Internet Protocol. VoIP enables:
- Voice calls to be made over an internet connection.
- Voice calls can be made over a range of different devices such as calls from your tablet, laptop or computer, VoIP phone or traditional phone with a VoIP adapter.
The VoIP system requires a broadband connection; this can be through a cable modem, a DSL, or a local area network.
How will this affect your business?
Switching from PSTN to VoIP could potentially affect a range of your business operations. From phone services to CCTV and door entry systems, there is a range of features that will likely be connected to the PSTN that you will have to make adjustments for the big switch.
Will the Switch Benefit Businesses?
The move to digital will improve the quality of communications as well as the overall network. Furthermore, the switch to VoIP will open up communications making it easier than ever, allowing you to make calls on any device all from the same number.
How Can Reduce My Costs Help You with the ISDN Switch Off?
Whilst the switch-off is planned to take place in 2025, the switch to VoIP is well underway. Businesses can no longer buy ISDN and PSTN systems and have not been able to do so since 2020. However, that means existing ISDN and PSTN systems in your business will still need to be changed in time for the switch off.
